Tumors of the mesothelium can be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). The latter is termed malignant mesothelioma as it is the malignant or cancerous form of mesothelioma.

A malignant tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma. Because most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is often simply called mesothelioma.

There is often a confusion between malignant mesothelioma with benign tumours that also start in the mesothelium.
