Mesothelioma Causes

Causes of Mesothelioma
In the mid 1950s, the causes of mesothelioma were unknown. However, as the number of mesothelioma cases increased and the research continued, the cause of mesothelioma was linked directly to asbestos exposure.

When asbestos is old and/or damaged, asbestos fibers come off and float into the air. As the fibers are inhaled, they travel to the ends of small air passages and reach the pleura where they cause mesothelioma. The physical damage to mesothelioma cells results in cancer and is therefore the main causes of mesothelioma cancer.

In addition, asbestos as the main cause ofmesothelioma, also causes injuries to the lung cells. This can cause lung cancer and/or asbestosis, which is the replacement of lung tissue by scar tissue. If this scar tissue is swallowed and reaches the abdominal cavity, it can cause mesothelioma peritoneal type.

Occupational mesothelioma comprised the majority of mesothelioma cases. However, environmental and familial by household contamination are also prominent. Causes of mesothelioma in households is through work clothes of an asbestos worker.

The chances of suffering from causes of mesothelioma rise with the intensity and duration of the asbestos exposure.

However, there have been many cases in the United States where victims of mesothelioma were only exposed to occupational or household asbestos in small doses. There have been cases where workers with summer jobs and their housewives have contracted mesothelioma. The causes of mesothelioma are definitely through any exposure to asbestos.

Smoking is not a cause of mesothelioma as originally predicted. However, the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure significantly increases a person’s risk of developing lung cancer. About 15 years after initial asbestos exposure, about 6% of asbestos workers die of causes of mesothelioma.
