Asbestos Siding

What is asbestos used in for building materials?
Asbestos fibers were added to asbestos siding for roofs and other siding materials to strengthen them, to increase the durability and to provide some insulation and fireproofing. However, the use of asbestos siding in homes and siding materials has decreased as health risks have been directly associated with asbestos and siding.

If you are unsure whether or not your siding or roofing contains asbestos, look for asbestos markings on the siding material or the packages that they came from. The Yellow Pages list laboratories under “Asbestos Siding or Asbestos – Consulting or Testing” if you require testing by professionals.

Asbestos siding and roofing materials in good condition can be left alone. However, repairing damaged asbestos siding is of utmost importance. It can be either repaired or covered by special materials to prevent harmful fibers from contaminating the air.

At all times, asbestos siding should not be exposed or damaged in any way. Asbestos siding is still used in some buildings but in limited quantities. However, please make sure that you see a physician to make sure that your asbestos siding has not given you mesothelioma.
