Asbestos

What is asbestos and asbestos exposure
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in deposits in Australia, Canada, South Africa and Russia. Although used much less then in the mid 1900s, asbestos is still dangerous when broken fibers are exposed to the open air. Asbestos exposure and subsequent asbestos removal have been important health topics during the past few years.

Asbestos was used for pipe insulation, car brakes, shingles, wallboards, tiles, ceilings and insulation until it was suspended by the federal government in the early 1970s. It wasn’t until the early 1980s that serious health risks were discovered through asbestos exposure. A large government campaign was subsequently ordered for asbestos removal from all living and public areas.

There has been considerable evidence and asbestos lawsuits from workers who have developed mesothelioma or other cancers as a result of asbestos exposure.

Precautionary measures have been implemented to reduce the risk of asbestos in the workplace and the process requires showering and changing clothes before leaving an asbestos filled area.

Asbestos exposure may increase the risk of several serious diseases including:
 • Mesothelioma
 • Asbestosis
 • Lung cancer
 • Other cancers affecting the larynx, oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney.

Asbestos removal is still a constant process as it was used very regularly in building and shipping construction. Many older homes still contain asbestos insulation and asbestos removal has become a big business. Asbestos exposure and it’s subsequent health risks have become more prevalent with time as many workers and people exposed to asbestos for long periods have time have developed mesothelioma, asbestosis or other cancers. Needless to say, both asbestos exposure and asbestos removal will continue for decades to come.

Asbestos is a very deadly mineral and it has to be treated that way. Many workers and families of workers are not properly trained and educated on the dangers of asbestos minerals and fibers. The understanding and public knowledge of this material has been on the rise since the countless asbestos class action lawsuits were initiated over the course of the past few decades. Asbestos cancer is 100% preventable.
